Participants of STRIPESCAPE are listening to the instructions of the committee members.
SUBANG JAYA | Taylor’s PAWS club and WWF-Malaysia organised an event called STRIPESCAPE on 7 October that aimed to raise awareness about tigers being an endangered species among students. Participants had to go through a man-made maze filled with five checkpoints, which they had to complete in order to reach the end of the maze and ‘save’ the tigers. As participants proceed along the maze, they had to decipher codes which revealed their next clue, through which they got to learn more about endangered tigers. STRIPESCAPE’s Organising Chairperson, School Of Architecture, Building And Design student, Darren Tan Quan Wen, 19, said he incorporated the Escape Room idea for the event because he wanted something that was practical yet entertaining for participants. “Instead of just listening to speeches about animal awareness, this escape game can bring students closer to animals, while educating themselves about the importance of tigers in Malaysia and why they should save them through the clues they unlocked,” he said. STRIPESCAPE’s PR and Marketing member and School Of Communication student, Alice Lau Xiao Lin, 19 said through this event, not only participants could contribute to tigers’ survival but they got to gain extra knowledge about tigers while enjoying themselves. “This event would be more impactful compared to the typical awareness talk because students nowadays have shorter attention spans and they tend to learn better through hands-on approach and that’s where the maze helps,” said Tan. School Of Bioscience student, Tan Jay-Mie, 18, who participated in the event believed the maze idea was 'refreshing'. “The event was exciting and I learned more about tigers than I had expected. “The whole 'escape the maze' idea is much better than a normal talk as I believed people tend to learn more when they are having fun,” she said. As a chairperson himself, Tan hoped by organising this type of event, students would be more interested to participate in the future besides inspiring them to think outside the box and bring something new to Taylor's. The participant with the fastest time to escape the maze will be awarded with a prize.
All proceeds from this event will go to WWF-Malaysia.
